Tony Curran's crew
The Thursday Murder ClubTony Curran's crew is the criminal network surrounding Tony Curran, whose authority over its members is clearest in his partnership with Gianni Gunduz: Gianni carried out a killing at Tony's instruction, while Tony was described as the boss. The novel gives only a partial picture of the group, but its scattered traces show how violence and loyalty within the network continue to shape events years later.
Identity and hierarchy
The crew is not described through a full membership roll or formal structure. Instead, investigators encounter it through old case material and the relationships around Tony. Gianni, who ran a taxi company, was in business with Tony, but Tony was the senior figure. That distinction matters: when Bogdan explains the death of his closest friend, he says Gianni killed him on Tony's order, making Tony responsible in Bogdan's eyes even though Gianni carried out the act.
Steve Georgiou had also been around the crew in its early days. When Chris Hudson and Donna De Freitas revisit the original Tony Curran file, they find Steve mentioned in connection with the group, but nothing in the record that would have justified bringing him in. His association did not last long; by the time of the later inquiry he had established Steve’s Gym, which had grown and earned a good reputation. The evidence therefore places him near the crew's history without establishing that he remained part of it.
Violence and business
Bogdan recounts that his taxi-driving friend witnessed Tony shoot a young boy from London in what Bogdan understood to be a drug-related incident. The details of the dispute were unknown to him. Bogdan says Gianni later killed his friend at Tony's direction; he regarded the order as making Tony responsible for the death. The account ties the crew to serious violence while leaving the specific business arrangements and the wider extent of its operations unstated.
Gianni's later boasts about having shot a man in the woods and having that man do the digging became important to Bogdan. Bogdan came to understand that Kazimir, whom he had thought might have gone home, had been killed. He used the possibility of money at Newhaven to lure Gianni to the port, where Steve Georgiou helped him gain access through a cousin working security. Bogdan killed Gianni there, then took his keys and cards and, with Steve, removed Gianni's passport, clothes, valuables, and a large amount of cash from his house. Bogdan said some of the money belonged to Tony and sent half of the roughly hundred thousand pounds he took to Kazimir's family. These events are not evidence of a formal crew operation; they show the personal retaliation and appropriation of the network's resources that followed its violence.
The crew's past in the investigation
The crew's history reaches the present through records and recollection rather than through a complete account of its activities. Chris Hudson and Donna De Freitas return to the original Tony Curran file while considering whether Steve Georgiou could be connected to Gianni's disappearance. The file establishes Steve's early proximity to Tony's associates but offers no grounds for treating him as a prosecutable member. This distinction between a documented association and proof of a crime is part of the investigators' effort to reconstruct the network without overstating what the old material can establish.
The Thursday Murder Club's wider investigations also show how old files can preserve clues long after official cases have stalled. Elizabeth and Penny Gray kept copies of Penny's past case files, and Elizabeth later returned to them when Karen Playfair's recognition of John prompted a final check. That practice does not supply a roster of Tony's crew, but it reflects the novel's recurring method: records and testimony accumulated over time can make buried connections visible, even when they cannot by themselves bring every past crime to justice.
